TAKS TESTING

2010 TAKS Results: TAKS results were handed out during finals week. Thank you to all those helping to distribute results AND to the students that made the effort to get their scores. About one third of our students did not pick up their TAKS scores the week of finals. For these families, expect to receive results in the mail during the month of June. Bowie parents, please encourage your child to pick up TAKS scores at the designated time. Students would be better served using the funds spent from this mailout in another area. Additional copies of TAKS scores are $1 each.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

AP students will receive bulletins and information about this through their AP instructors.  All AP exams will be given May 2 - May 13, 2011.  Click on the link below for specific course test dates. In order to register for exams, students must complete a registration form in the counseling office along with submitting payment and receiving a receipt at that time.  Students who do not follow the proper procedure will not be guaranteed a test.

ADDITIONAL ADVANCED PLACEMENT INFORMATION

INFO FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

After completing an AP course, AISD students may participate in the Advanced Placement Exams held each year in May. The District pays a portion of the registration fee for each AP student. Students approved for the Free/Reduced Lunch Program are eligible for a further reduction in the registration fee. Results of the exams are sent to colleges and universities that the student designates. Based on the scores and the university course recognition procedures, students may earn college credit.

PSAT

PSAT 2010 Test Date: Wednesday, October 13 from 8:50 - Noon

PSAT PREPARATION

Notice: 10th and 11th grade students will receive their PSAT scores in January.  Advisory teachers will conduct information sessions on how to understand and use these test results, and the College and Career Center will provide a brown bag session for parents about interpreting results.  The College Board offers a wonderful tool on-line to help students and parents use these results in many ways.  We encourage everyone to take a look at the www.collegeboard.com/quickstart website to take full advantage of this opportunity.

All 10th and 11th grade students will receive the PSAT Student and Parent Guide from their English teacher approximately one month before the PSAT is administered. There is a practice test included in the guide...a great resource for boosting confidence!

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), which is the National Merit Qualifying Test (NMSQT), provides students an opportunity to take a practice test that is a retired SAT and serves as a predictor of scores on the SAT. The SAT is a test student’s may take as part of their college admission. AISD provides funding for all sophomores and juniors to take the PSAT at no personal expense and administers the Wednesday exam districtwide. Freshmen take a free practice PSAT to help them prepare for taking the PSAT as a sophomore and junior. For juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT is the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. Juniors who perform exceptionally well on the test may be eligible for National Merit Scholarships. The PSAT is given each year in mid-October. Homeschooled and Out-of-District students wanting to take the PSAT are directed to call the AISD Guidance and Counseling Department at 512-414-0173 for information about registering.

SAT QUESTION OF THE DAY

INFO FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

The SAT (Reasoning Test) measures critical reading, writing and mathematical knowledge and aptitude and includes some material not generally taught in school. It also includes a twenty-five minute essay for the writing portion. Students will receive three scores on the 200-800 scale-one for critical reading, one for math, and one for writing. Students will also receive two sub-scores: a multiple-choice score from 20-80 and an essay score from 2-12. The total writing score, which is a combination of the multiple choice and essay scores, is reported on the 200- 800 scale. The essay will make up approximately 30% of the writing section score. For more information including study help, visit College Board at www.collegeboard.org.

ACT TESTING STRATEGIES

ACT PRACTICE QUESTIONS

INFO FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

The ACT is a three-hour multiple-choice test measuring achievement in four areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. The writing test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. Each sub-test yields a score of 1-36. Averaging the four sub-tests produces a composite score that also is reported on a scale of 1-36.

THEA/ASSET

EXEMPTION:
Students must score at or above the following to be exempt from the THEA.

TAKS – Math 2200, Language Arts 2200, and Writing Subsection of 3 or better; or
SAT – combined verbal and math score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on both the verbal and math tests; or
ACT – composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both the English and math tests.

The THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) is required for entry to any Texas public college or university. Students must take and pass tests in reading, mathematics, and writing. Even students who wish to take dual credit courses or to concurrently enroll in high school and college must have THEA scores prior to enrolling in college courses. The THEA Program consists of the three tests that measure skills students have learned in high school, advisement and placement, and remediation for students who do not pass one or more sections. THEA is not an admissions test. It will not limit students’ access to college.

Students should check with their counselor to see if they qualify as THEA exempt. Colleges vary in their admissions requirements and in their use of college admissions test scores. Students should consult the admissions offices for specific information. Many colleges encourage students to take both tests and use their best score.
