FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

The Foreign Exchange Program brings students from other countries to live with host families here in the United States. The District may limit the number of foreign exchange students at its high schools through an agreement with TEA due to space limitations. Exchange students are placed in the four core subjects - English, Math, Science and Social Studies(US History), as well as elective courses of their choosing. Foreign exchange students are required to take a full load and meet the same expectations of courses and level change procedures as the rest of the student body. It is important for the student to understand English and to be able to effectively communicate with the host family, teachers and fellow students as the purpose of the program is to build cultural and social understanding, and international relationships. The host family must live within Bowie's attendance zone.

Exchange students who have graduated from a comparable high school program in their home country are not eligible to participate in the Foreign Exchange Program with AISD.

Foreign Exchange students seeking to graduate from AISD must provide additional documentation prior to enrolling at Bowie. The documentation will be evaluated to determine the student's eligibility for graduation. These students must meet the same graduation and TAKS requirements as all other AISD students.

TRANSCRIPTS

The transcript is a record of the grades and credits earned in high school. The high school transcript will also show any credits you earned in junior high that qualify as high school credit.  Transcripts are maintained as permanent archives for all graduates. Transcripts may be ordered in person, mail, e-mail, or by phone.

Transcript Cost: The cost is $2.00 per transcript and payment must be made before the transcript is processed. Orders will be available within 48 hours after payment. The envelope must remain sealed to keep the transcript official.

How to Order Transcripts for Current Students: The preferable method of ordering a transcript is to log on to Naviance/Family Connection and request your transcript by clicking College Tab or you may stop by the Registrar's Office. If ordering through Naviance, you MUST pay for your transcript BEFORE it is processed. Click here for detailed instructions.

Seniors:The college you choose to attend will require a Final Transcript, which is mailed to them after the appropriate request is made to the Registrar. Transcripts sent to colleges must be sent by Bowie High School. Current seniors should request the final transcript using Naviance/Family Connection. HOWEVER, once the request has been made, students must inform the Registrar that the request has been made or the transcript can not be processed. The initial final transcript is free but subsequent final transcripts must be pre-paid and an address provided for mailing. Final transcripts are not available until late June, and will be mailed out as soon as they are processed, but no later than July 1.

Transcripts for Scholarships: Present the Registrar's Office with your completed scholarship application and the $2.00 fee will be waived.

For Former Students: Students over the age of 18 must provide the following: student name at the time of graduation, phone number, date of birth, date of graduation, and number of copies requested. Please allow 2 days for processing.

GRADING SCALE

AISD Grading Scale

Grading Scale In Place Prior To School Year 2007-08:
Applicable To 12th Grade Students in School Year 2009-2010
Advanced Level Courses 5.0 scale
Non-Advanced Level Courses 4.0 scale

Integrated Grading Scale (IGS) Implemented School Year 2007-08:
Applicable To 9th - 11th Grade Students in School Year 2009-2010
The rigor of the course curriculum determines the weight of the grade and
tier level of the given course.

TIER I courses include: Advanced Placement (AP), high school Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP), TEA-identified advanced courses, articulated Tech Prep courses, and dual credit courses at designated colleges or universities.

TIER II courses include grade-level-TEKS courses. TIER II also includes courses completed with limited modifications that do not impact state mandated exit level testing readiness.

TIER III courses include locally developed courses for students receiving special education services, TAKS preparatory courses and non-TEKS
curriculum aligned courses such as office aide.

CLASSIFICATION

High School Grade Level Classification
Grade-level advancement for students in grades 9-12 shall be determined by course credits. Credits are earned by meeting the minimum passing standard average of 70 at the end of each course and meeting the 90% attendance rule; credits may be awarded through yearlong averaging. Speak with the Registrar if you have questions about your classification.

Grade Classification
9th grade requires promotion from the 8th grade and 0-4.5 credits.
10th grade requires completion of a minimum of 5.0 credits.
11th grade requires completion of a minimum of 10.0 credits.
12th grade requires completion of a minimum of 15.0 credits.

Additionally,
  • Denied credit(NCs), including those denied due to excessive absences, are not included when factoring credit totals. NOTE: Once the requirements are met for recovering credit, the student's grade classification will be changed at the next ranking period in accordance with AISD policy;
  • Credit totals are based on all awarded credits, including local credits and repeated credits.
CLASS RANK AND GPA

Information regarding Class Rank and GPA cannot be provided over the telephone because identification cannot be confirmed. Students may stop by the registrar's office and present a photo ID to receive the information. New class rankings and GPA's are generated after each semester and are available late January and late June. This means that GPA and class rank will change only after the completion of a semester.

Students and parents may also log on to Naviance/Family Connection at any time to view this information on the student's profile. Log in using the Student ID in both the Email and Password fields. GPA information is located under the ABOUT ME tab. You will need class size to calculate the rank, this is located on the Naviance/Family Connection page of the Counselor's Corner.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

Trustees' Scholar Award

The district has established a program of annual awards to high school students to recognize and encourage outstanding academic achievement. It is know as the annual Trustees' Scholar Award Ceremony. A yearly certificate is given to qualifying students. The recipients must be scholastically within the top ten percent of the class group at the end of the first five reporting periods for that school year. Students must have earned at least a 3.0 GPA. A student who receives an Incomplete or an NC grade shall not be eligible to receive the award. The Trustee Awards does NOT replace the Cumulative Ranking that is done twice a year, in January and in June. The Cumulative Rankings is information used for the top 10% in each class for colleges, or any other request based on the ranking of the class, not the trustee awards.

PASS/FAIL

PASS/FAIL
Pass/Fail (P/F) Forms are located outside of the Registrar's Office and only apply to ONE semester. The deadline to submit a pass/fail form is the final day of the first six weeks of each semester. A student may choose to take a course pass/fail, only if the course is beyond state graduation requirements in that subject area for the graduation plan that the student has declared. Prior written approval of the student, parent, teacher, and counselor must be acquired. Courses taken pass/fail are considered as local credit only and are not counted toward state graduation credit. With the exception of physical education equivalent waiver courses, the pass/fail status can only be used for high school courses. The grades in a course taken pass/fail will be recorded numerically for each six weeks grading period and for the final exam, but the final course grade will be recorded as a “P” or an “F”. Students are strongly advised to speak with their counselor or the college counselor if considering pass/fail.

DIPLOMAS

Diplomas are available from the registrar's office on the Monday after graduation. Students do not receive the actual diploma at the graduation ceremony.

Duplicate diplomas are available from a vendor other than AISD. The current cost is $23.40. Please contact the registrar for further information.
